Fraser Island

Fraser Island is an Australian world heritage listed holiday paradise which is located just of the off the city of Hervey Bay on Queensland’s Fraser Coast and it will leave you in awe of its history and beauty. This is the largest sand island in the world and has been in its current state for around 850000 years. The island is over 120 kilometres long and 30 kilometres in width and is now regenerating to its former glory after being subjected to logging and sand mining industries. It has a unique natural environment and is also the only place in the world where rainforests grow in sand. Fraser Island has abundant pristine lakes and crystal clear creeks and streams are some of its major draw-cards. Lakes Mckenzie, Birrabeen, Wabby and Allom together with Eli Creek are just a few that must be seen on your visit to Fraser Island.

Rainforests with towering Satinays and brush box trees, some over 1000 years old make Fraser Island an unforgettable experience. There is prolific wildlife throughout the island. You can see up to 325 species of birds, wallabies, possums, flying foxes, echidnas, and Australia’s purest population of dingoes. In addition, unique species of freshwater turtles can be found in the many lakes. Surrounding the island you can view many species including dolphins, whales, dugongs and turtles.

The fabulous Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village is found on the western shore of the island and can be accessed from River head near Hervey Bay by vehicular ferry. On the ocean side of the island there are resorts, holiday apartments and holiday cabins. Fraser Island Tours

 

There are many tours to Fraser Island. Some are day tours and some extended for up to three days. Tours can be found that depart from either Brisbane, Rainbow Beach, Noosa or Hervey Bay. The most popular are run by Fraser Venture Tours and Sunrover tours. There are camping tours as well as tours accommodated in luxury accommodation.

Fraser Island Accommodation

On Fraser island, accommodation is available in a number of formats. At places like Eurong, Happy Valley and Orchid Beach, you can find plenty of holiday homes and cabins. Apartment style accommodation is available at Happy Valley and Eurong and resort style accommodation at Kingfisher Bay resort, Eurong Beach and at Happy Valley.

Fraser Island general Information

Barge services to Fraser Island operate from inskip point at the islands southern end and at River Heads near Hervey Bay on the western side. There are no sealed roads on Fraser Island. Tracks are sand and have very little maintenance. You can only drive around Fraser Island in a four wheel drive vehicle, so if you dont have one you will need to hire one. They are available from Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach and on the island itself. You will also require a permit to access Fraser Island. These can be purchased at Rainbow Beach and at River Heads. Camping is allowed on the island and again a permit is required. There are several camping areas that have toilets and hot showers however you can also camp along the ocean beach. When driving on Fraser Island you should exercise great care. Speed limits apply and they are enforced. Wash outs on the ocean beach caused by natural watercourses running out to sea have been the cause of many serious and sometimes fatal accidents so please drive with care and enjoy your time exploring beautiful Fraser Island.
